Onondaga Diversion to Community Service

Program Description

Cayuga Counseling Services, Inc. manages this, one of the largest community service sentencing programs in the state.  This program provides placement and supervision for eligible and suitable (7 years and up) non-violent defendants referred by Probation, Family, City, Town, County, Supreme and Federal Courts.  This sentence option allows defendants to remain employed and to preserve community ties.  This provides positive community action and is a deterrent as powerful as incarceration.

Referral/Discharge Process

Referrals are made to the program by the Court, Attorney, or Probation Officer.  The client is then interviewed by one of the staff and placed at an appropriate work site in the community. There are over one hundred different non-profit work sites through out the county.  Program staff monitor the client's hours through site contact.  When the hours have been completed and verification received from the work site, the staff member will do a closing report to the appropriate court.  This will be completed only when the hours have been completed and the fee has been paid in full. The fee is based on the client's ability to pay.

Hours, Location, Fees

The program is located on the 6th Floor of the Civic Center in Syracuse. The office is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is a minimum fee of thirty-five dollars or based on number of hours performed.
