Juvenile Special Supervision

The Juvenile Special Supervision Program (JSS) was designed to reduce the reliance on the use of non-secure detention in Juvenile Delinquency and PINS cases, by providing intensive supervision and case management services to children and families awaiting disposition in Family Court.

The program provides strength based services to families, fosters better communication between family members and provides supervision to the child/adolescent. Families receive 24 hours a day, 7 days a week supervision and case management services. Program staff works mostly on the road performing home and school visits.

This close supervision, family work, and case management keeps children and adolescents out of detention and at home.

What the JSS program means for the Juvenile Justice System

  • Program staff available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with an emphasis on evenings and weekends. The level and frequency of contact is determined by a Risk Assessment Instrument developed by Onondaga County and the Vera Institute of Justice
  • Intake conducted in the home within 24 hours of referral using an assessment tool that will help    identify needed services.
  • Weekly reports to referring Family Court Judge, Health and Human Services, County Attorney’s office and the Probation Department providing the supervision requirements of each case.
  • Transportation Assistance.
  • This program will provide supervision with a high frequency of home and school contact. Family involvement will include assessment and referral as well as crisis management services. Juvenile Special Supervision will afford clients every opportunity to be successful by increasing school attendance and preventing further Family Court involvement.

What the JSS program means for Families

  • We will meet with you and your child in your home and work together to develop a plan that meets the family’s needs.
  • We will be available to you at all times to answer your questions, help resolve problems and help to manage crises.
  • We will help your child succeed in school by advocating for him/her.
  • We will help maintain services by providing transportation.

This program’s case manager will be a partner with families and assist them in making a plan that provides the best opportunity for their child to remain home during this difficult time.
